Ministry Tip from TJOSM

TJOSM being The Journal of Student Ministries:

Don’t Say That Word
by Steve Case

A few years back my group developed an overabundant use of the word suck. It became so rampant that I purchased a few packs of those little tiny spiral notebooks. (This were unofficially called “suck books.”) I challenged them to spend one week and not use that term at all–and at the same time to keep track of every time they heard it (on TV, through music, with friends, or saw it written down). What we discovered is when students didn’t say it, they become incredibly aware of how much other people do. Use of the word decreased considerably (not completely, but a lot). It was a great way to make my students aware of something without me being the one to say “Okay, that’s enough…Let’s stop it now…Come on guys…That’s enough!”

  1. our word was “Your Mom”… Well, that’s actually a phrase, but the principle remains.

That’s a really good way to deal with negativity. I may use that in the future.
