Kathleen Baskin-Ball passed away this morning. She was 50.
Kathleen has, since 2001, been Sr. Pastor at Suncreek UMC in Allen, Texas. I’ve never been to that church, and neither have most of you. But Kathleen’s ministry extended far beyond that congregation, thus this post.
Kathleen was one of the best preachers I’ve ever heard. She had an incredible way of weaving stories from her own experience, or those whose lives she had intersected, into the gospel.
Even more than her preaching, though, Kathleen radiated the love of God like few others I’ve known. Her ministry cross lines and blurred differences, drawing all toward God. Her life proved the truth of Jesus’ statement in John 12:32 that “when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself”(NRSV). Kathleen lifted Jesus.
What little contact I had with Kathleen made me want to know God that well; to love Jesus that much; to be willing to lay aside every weight and sin that clings so close.
May all of us who have encountered Kathleen, and in her encountered God, live with the passion that she showed.
