Christmas Pondering

Or, perhaps, pondering Christmas.

I don’t know why I’m thinking about it so much this year, but I can’t get past thinking about Christmas-as-it-is as compared to Christmas-as-we-expect-it-to-be.

Movies and TV shows tend to support the latter, Christmas-as-we-expect-it-to-be (which I’ll call C2 from here forward).  These shows help us rev ourselves up in expecting this Christmas to be difference, better, happier, hope-ier than all the Christmases past.  C2 holds out the hope before us that if nothing else changes, some neat trick or turn of events can swoop in at the last minute and leave us all crying tears of joy together.

The C2 Christmas climaxes with buying the world a coke and singing “we are the world” together.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

As long as we long for C2, we are living Einstein’s definition.

I am going to focus my christmassy energies for the next 7 days on living in and expecting Christmas-as-it-is instead of C2.

I’ll let you know if it ends up differently.

For now, though, Rachel and I are on our way out of town for a couple of days to celebrate her birthday.
