Faithful in the little things…

There are many more substantive issues coming out of General Conference in Tampa these days.  Since many people who are brighter, fairer, and more eloquent than I are commented on them, I choose to share this instead.

A few days ago, a good friend of mine who serves as a lay delegate to General Conference tweeted this:

Anyone else notice we have broken the ‘adjourn by 9:30’ rule every single night we’ve met as general plenary so far?

I have heard horror stories before about the hours kept during General Conference.  Perhaps one of the reasons it only happens every four years is so that delegates can catch up on their sleep!

Seriously, though, as I read that tweet, I thought of these words of Jesus:

“Whoever is faithful with little is also faithful with much, and the one who is dishonest with little is also dishonest with much.

There are, of course, at least two ways to gain integrity with such a “little thing” as an “adjourn by” rule:

  1. obey the rule
  2. get rid of the rule.

Either way, or, perhaps, another way, it does seem to me that if we could learn, as a church, to be faithful in such little things as the rules we impose upon ourselves, greater opportunities for faithfulness may begin to abound!
