I had a realization moment this past weekend. We have been listening to a lot of Christmas music the last couple of weeks, and I am loving it.
I realized, though, that my memories of pop culture Christmas music go back as far as Christmas 1972, and really no further.
That was my first Christmas in the US after living overseas in Japan and Korea for three years.
Living overseas had been great. I will ever appreciate the experiences we had, sights seen, placed visited. I am quite sure those years had a good amount of formative effect on me.
One part of that I just put together this past weekend. I had barely a clue of anything that was going on in the US at the time. We watched no television, listened to no radio. In fact, the only (vague) recollection I have fr those years of life in the US was someone who had moved there more recently than we brought the song “Leavin’ on a jet plane” with them.
So, moving back to the US at the age of 9, in late 1972, was a sudden facing of all things pop-culture that that year had to offer. Admittedly, this was not all that much in the case of our family.
It does make me wonder now, though, what it would be like to be dropped into our culture today.
